School of Computing FAQ
This FAQ is to answer some of the main questions we get asked a lot. If you can't find an answer to your question or you would like to suggest an addition to the FAQ, please contact us.
I can't login!
Your Computing network username/password is the same as your DCU username/password that
you received at Registration.
My account has been disabled, what do I do?
Please see this page.
I've lost my project files!
No Problem. Just restore them from your CD/USB drive backup. Don't have a CD/USB drive backup - Big Problem! Please see this page.
How do I get my Laptop connected to the School of Computing Wireless Network?
There are two different Wireless networks within DCU. There's the main DCU wireless network, which you
would pick up in the Library, Henry Grattan and or Campus buildings. To configure your laptop to connect
to the main DCU wireless, see this page
provided by ISS. Any problems, contact ISS!. To login to our Wireless Network and get internet access
please see this page. At this stage you can't get your H: drive through
the wireless, but we are looking to pilot this function later in the year.
What the story with printing?
Please see this page.
How much space have I got left in my account?
For your H: drive - just right-click on the drive letter under 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'. This
should show you how much space you've used and how much space you have left. In Linux, open up a terminal
window and type the following command:
quota
Note: A lot of space can be taken up with Email folders/Browser Cache/Trash.
Ensure you delete your old emails and empty your trash if you are running out of space.
Can I get access to my Home directory from at home?
Access to your 'H:' drive in Windows is currently not available outside the School of Computing. A solution
to this is being looked at. Access to your Unix/Linux home directory is available from outside the School
of Computing through SSH. For more information, please see here.
Can I play this little web game in the lab?
NO. Playing any games is against the School of Computing lab rules. You can
do that at home. If any member of staff finds you playing games, you can be fined €20 and your
account disabled.
Can I get my favourite software installed on a computer?
NO. Same as above. Labs are imaged each year and the software is set then. Illegal applications are
against lab rules.
Where do I put my web pages?
Please see this page.
