- Head of School of Computing: (20th December '01)
Congratulations to Prof. Joe
Morris on his appointment as Head of School. He will take
over from Prof. Alan Smeaton
on the 1st January 2002 for a period of three years.

- ISOS-Royal
Irish Academy: (20th December '01)
Irish Script on Screen (ISOS),
a website hosted by the School of Computing, now includes
images of manuscripts from the Royal
Irish Academy. These include Lebor na hUidre, the earliest
surviving manuscript with literature in Irish. This manuscript
contains the oldest version of Táin Bó Cuailgne

- Arthur
Anderson Prize: (8th November '01)
Following the graduation on Friday 2nd November, students from
the MSc in ECommerce group were presented with the Arthur Anderson
prize for best overall practicum.

- PC
Anywhere Software: (1st November '01)
New software is now in use which allows remote administration
of computers. This software allows technical support staff to
perform remote diagnostics on a machine without leaving the helpdesk
- error messages can be viewed, aiding resolution. Should a student
have a problem with a PC it can be accessed remotely and the problem
solved promptly.

- "Voices"

An art exhibition in various media will be held in the School of Computing, DCU from 22nd October- 9th November
2001. (Monday-Friday 10am - 5pm / Late Opening Thursday to 9.30pm).
Official opening by Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski (President)
on Monday Oct. 22nd at 5.30pm. Admission Free.

- IBM
Linux Scholar Challenge: (12th October '01)
The IBM Linux Challenge is a competition for university students.
In order to compete entrants need to complete the on-line registration
by October 15th, 2001. Prizes include ThinkPads for students and
entry level Linux servers for universities.

- Lab L1. 28 - NEW:
(11th October '01)
A new computer laboratory is now open for Computer Application
students. Equipment Details - 45 x Fujitsu Siemens 1GHz PIII machines,
256 MB RAM, 20 GB HD, CAT5E, CD-RW, Mitsubishi x 390 High Beam
Projector 2000 Lumens.

- Seminar: (9th October
'01)
Dr. Mike Scott will be
presenting a Formal Methods & Security seminar entitled "Secure
communications using a low entropy secret" on Thursday 11th
October at 11:00 in L2.41.

- Cluster Group: (8th
October '01)
A cluster of 20 PCs has been built during Summer 2001 which will
be used for work on parallel algorithms within the school. We
are very grateful to the following students who worked on this
project and made it possible:- Cillian Sharkey (CA2), Trevor Johnston

- Faculty Office Hours
for Students: (2nd October '01)
The Faculty Office (L1.15) will be open for students between11-12.30
and 2.30- 4.00, Monday to Friday.

- CA
Helpdesk: (2nd October '01)
The Helpdesk will be open during the evenings and weekends, as
and from Monday 8th October 2001. The hours of opening will be
Monday to Thursday inclusive, 5.00-7.00pm and Saturday mornings
9.00 -1.00pm. The Helpdesk is situated in room LG 24 on the ground
floor of the Computer Applications building.

- Associate Membership
for Digital Video Processing Centre: (1 Oct '01)
The Centre for Digital Video
Processing - a joint venture between the School of Computing and the School of Electronic Engineering, has just
become an Associate Member of the EU-funded DELOS
Network of Excellence, specialising in the area of Digital
Libraries. Associate Membership will allow members of the research
centre to receive funding to partake in DELOS-funded conferences,
workshops and meetings.
