go Karting: (22nd June '00)
To celebrate (almost) reaching the end of the academic year ,
all staff in the School and the Faculty office were invited to
a few hours spent go karting in Santry on Tuesday, 20th June followed
by a meal in Little Venice.

- Innovative
video streaming facility at DCU : (16th June '00)
DCU has announced the implementation of an innovative video streaming
facility, with additional indexing, editing and storage capabilities
for digital video, using the Sun Microsystems platform.

- Final
Year Project Display 2000 awards: (12th June '00)
The Final Year Project Display was held on the 8th of July 2000
here in the School of Computing. Prizes were awarded
to the best final year projects from Orbism and Critical Path.

- Plaque
Donations: (5th June '00)
Plaque donations have been gratefully received for the Laboratories
and Seminar Rooms of the new School of Computing Building.

- Congratulations to
the Centre for Digital Video Processing: (5th June '00)
Congratulations to the Centre for Digital Video Processing, a
University Designated Research Centre which is a collaboration
between this School and the School of Electronic Engineering,
on securing £40,000 funding from the University to continue
their work during 2000/2001. The Físchlár
system developed by the Centre allows digital recording of
TV programmes, analysis and playback onto desktops within the
School Intranet.

- Formal
Launch of the Setanta Project: (29th May '00)
The Setanta Project, a collaboration between the School of Computing and St. Aidans School in Whitehall, had its formal
launch by An Taoiseach on Friday 19 May. The project, coordinated
in DCU by Margaret Farren and Ray Walshe, allows our expertise
in using computing in teaching and the programming skills of CA
students, to be put in practice in a the real teaching environment
of St. Aidan's Secondary school. Congratulations to all involved.

- M.Sc. in Electronic
Commerce / Postgraduate Skills Conversion Programme: (29th May
'00)
We have just received comfirmation from the HEA that the M.Sc.
in Electronic Commerce is acceptable for inclusion under the
Postgraduate Skills Conversion Programme for 2000/2001. This means
that fees to be charged will be similar to those for the Graduate
Diploma in Information Technology which were £650 for
1999/2000

- Upgrade of the connection
to the Internet at DCU : (19th May '00)
The Computer Services Department at DCU has announced the successful
upgrade of the connection to the Internet at DCU commencing today,
19 May 2000. DCU has moved from a 2 Megabits/second connection
to HEAnet, and now has a 10 Megabits/second constant bit rate
ATM connection to the same organisation. Interested users can
view
the DCU internet traffic online .

- Congrats
to David Gray and Mark Roantree: (2nd May '00)
Of the five proposals under the Strategic Research Grants Scheme
2000 funded in DCU, yielding a total funding of £345,000,
two people from CA were successful. Our congratulations to Mark Roantree.
Under this scheme DCU ranked joint third (out of 11 institutions
funded) in terms of the number of successful proposals and fifth
in terms of total funding awarded.

- DCU
have a new look timetable developed by CA: (28th April '00)
This is now available from the quick search feature off the DCU
timetabling page. This was developed for a CA3 project and implemented
by the webeditor of DCU across all formats of the timetable. When
the timetable is displayed, click on the room and the detail of
the lecture/practical will appear on the bar at the bottom of
the screen.

- Computer Applications
web server log file statistics: (27th April '00)
Now online are the log file staistics for January, Febuary and
March '00. This gives a statistical summary of the overall usage
of the CA web server... Also the log files for '99.

- PIPSI
(Process for Improving Programming Skills in Industry): (17th
April '00)
PIPSI is a European Commission funded initiative developed by
Dublin City University, European Software Institute, Politecnico
di Torino, IVF and Université Thomson which provides a
process improvement framework for use by individual software engineers
working in European SMEs.

- School of Computing hosts Annual CESI Fair: (10th April '00)
On Saturday 8th April, the School of Computing once
again hosted the Annual fair of the Computer Education Society
of Ireland. 38 projects were on display representing work from
120 students in 15 schools from around the country. The "DCU
Shield" was awarded by Mr. Richard Bruton, T.D.

- SOLVED:DCU
help to solve the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem:
(5th April '99)
School of Computing contributing to global calculation
to crack the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem..... The
solution was finally detected today after more than 2 million
distinguished points were calculated. The two people who
found the matching points were were Jean-Frederic Clere from Apache
Team and Asa Reed from Colorado Group.

- PhD in Computer Applications:
(27th March '00)
Congratulations to Darragh O'Brien who was conferred with his
PhD in Computer Applications on 25th March. His Supervisor was
Dr. Alex Monaghan.

- School of Computing receive donation from Hewlett-Packard: (20th March
'00)
The School of Computing has just taken delivery of
a donation from Hewlett-Packard of 25 high spec PCs, one PC server,
5 desktop scanners and 3 laser printers. These will be used for
undergraduate computing and will be installed in the laboratories
shortly.

- NEW M.Sc.
in Electronic eCommerce : (20th March '00)
Dublin City University Business School and the School of Computing announce the launch of an M.Sc. degree in Electronic
Commerce, with two distinct concentrations, to commence in Autumn
2000

- Digital
Video Processing: (17th February '00)
In a competitive internal screening process, the Centre for Digital
Video Processing was recently awarded "University Designated
Research Centre" status.
|
- Fulbright Scholarships
for the coming year: (11February '00)
Of the three DCU-related applicants which have been awarded Fulbright
Scholarships for the coming year, one is Dr. Donal Fitzpatrick,
who graduated from this school with a PhD in October 1999. Well
done Donal!

- 88 x IBM thin client
machines will be available for use from Monday 7th: (4th February
'00)
From Monday 7th of February, LG26, LG27 and LG28 will be available
for student use. These labs give us 88 x IBM thin client machines
