Research Profile

John Murphy's main interests are in the areas of database theory, query optimisation, multidatabase systems, interoperability of legacy systems, formal methods, and healthcare information systems. This has included the design and construction of an Interoperator Prototype for Multidatabase Systems using a CORBA implementation from Iona Technologies (Orbix). An algebra and calculus have been developed for multidatabase systems as part of this work. Dr. Murphy is developing language extensions to multidatabase languages to facilitate specification of constraints for tightly coupled federated systems.

Other research areas in which Dr. Murphy is interested include program language design and software engineering. He is particularly interested in formal specification techniques within these areas.
