Project: CA3;  Survey Design.

  1. Develop a graphical display in R to reproduce as near as possible the pie chart  given in Diagram 1and  bar chart given in Diagram 2

  1. In Opinion Polls, the margin of error at the 95% confidence  is estimated as   1.96 * sqrt(pq/n)

where p is the proportion in favour, and q = 1-p, and n is the sample size

(a) Use R to calculate the margin of error for various values of   n (e.g. n = 100, 200, 300... 1000, 2000, 3000, etc), and plot on a diagram with the x axis representing the sample size and the y axis the margin of error.

(b) On you graph, mark the margin of error when n = 1,000, which is the usual sample size used in national opinion polls.

© Discuss how the margin of error is related to sample size

Projects  must be ready for presentation at the week beginning Dec 7th 2009.

(3)Questionnaire Design

Due date: To be handed in at end of lecture on Thur 5th Nov.

Design a questionnaire to survey your classmates in CAIS to obtain information on their experiences at DCU to date.

You might need to know.

These are only suggestions. You must state clearly the aims of your investigation. Make sure the questions you ask fulfil the aims.

Take care not to make your questionnaire too long (Maximum 2 typed pages?)

Test your completed questionnaire on 3 or 4 of your classmates.

Make appropriate changes.

You must hand up to me

  1. Survey Aims
  2. Questionnaire before pilot
  3. Description of problems and ambiguities that were highlighted at pilot.
  4. Revised questionnaire.

Don’t forget to consult Moser, Oppenheim, Sudman and Berdie
