Jane Horgan is an Associate Professor in Statistics at Dublin City University. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Statisticians, and a member of the Association of Statistics of Ireland.  She has also lectured at the Autonomous University of Mexico, University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, Dublin Institute of Technology, University College Cork and the London School of Economics. She graduated from University College Cork with a double First Class Honours B.A in mathematics and statistics, and went on to the London School of Economics to specialise in statistics, where she obtained an MSc. She completed a PhD at London City University.

Dr. Horgan's interest in teaching and in using technology at the chalk face dates back to the eighties; with increased availability of low-cost computing, she began to develop interactive techniques for illustrating statistical concepts . In more recent work,  published in IEEE Transactions in Education (2005) an the Computer Journal (2005),  software systems to teach computing and computer science, and to detect plagiarism are considered.

 

She is involved in research both singly and in collaboration in the areas of statistical sampling and estimation.  In 1997, her research in sampling strategies for  financial auditing has won an international research award  Anbar's Citation of Excellence, for `outstanding contribution to the literature and body of knowledge'.. She has published over a hundred pieces of work in international refereed journals, professional journals, conference proceedings, and commissioned reports.  Her work can be found in journals such a  Survey Methodology, Computer Journal,   International Statistical Review,  Journal of Business and Economic Statistics of the American Statistical Association, Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, IEEE Transactions, Journal of Official Statistics,  Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, South African Journal of Computing, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, J. de  Contaduria y Administracion, The Irish Accounting Review, Accounting and Business Research. She has obtained funding from Enterprise Ireland to engage in International Collaboration, and to supervise research students (IRCSET)
