This is for people who have never played
guitar before, if you have can play go
our intermediate section. If not you are in the
right place.
Holding the guitar and your pick
Once you have your guitar in hand, the neck is made up of frets-the
parts divided
by the metal strips.Make sure the fat string is at the top and the body
pressed
against you and the guitar rests on your leg-furtherest from the guitar
head.
Your fret hand should have its thumbe behind the neck and your other fingers
in
a curled position waiting for action. Now get your pick.
Now you have to learn to hold it properly
-Put the pick inbetween your thumb and index finger with the point away
from your
fist. It should be behind the thumb knuckle. Now take your pick hand and
gently
strum down on the strings (dont worry about the fret hand. Experiment
with
different methods of strumming-it will be very hard at first. Try picking
individual
strings up and down fluidicly. Then move on to more than one string. Or
alternate
between the two-just get used to both styles.
Tuning
If you know someone that plays guitar get them to tune your guitar for
you-or you
can get an electronic tuner which listens to the strings and helps you
tune it.
You may want to research tuning and methods
Scales
This will help you get some co-ordination between left and right hand
do this slowly
at first-here is an example:-

This is the pentatonic bluesscale-play each note individually starting
at the bottom
left(1) on the fat string move to the next fret(4) and then the next string
2nd fattest
You can play this anywhere on th fretboard aslong as you keep the shape.
Chords
Go to our Chord Page to find the different chords-look
up the G,D and C chords and learn these. First learn the fingering of
each then strum them individually then try
moving from one to the other while strumming this may take a while and
be very
difficult. Here is an explanation of our chord tablature.

Songs
You obviously want to play a song so try and find a song that uses
these chords or
something similar. Just use down strokes and play each Chord 4 times,
then start trying to get the right rhtym.
Other info
The string Names from the fat string E-A-D-G-B-E to the thin string.
It would be a
good idea to learn a few more chords like the A, Am, Dm, E, Em, F, Fm
to be able to play more songs.
This is just a very basic expalnation it is recommended you find more
rounded information or get youself a teacher.
