This diagram depicts some of the many subjects that "Scientific Computing" overlaps, and contributes to.
Depending on interests and objectives, different researchers focus on different aspects of "Scientific Computing" (such as a particular application area or specific techniques/methods or on theory etc).
Not possible or desirable to segregate topics completely -> Use everything you've got! Often, researchers need to collaborate.
We now present five examples to give some feeling for different aspects of the field.
NOTES:
(1) All these notes were prepared using
MATHEMATICA (some related specific links include a, b and c).(2) Examples 2 and 3 are drawn from Geophysical Data Analysis: Discrete Inverse Theory by W. Menke (DCU library reference 551MEN). This text is probably a bit advanced for first year.
