I was a post-doctoral researcher at the Irish National Centre for Language Technology (NCLT) from September 2005 until June 2008. I worked primarily in the areas of natural language parsing and machine translation. My interests lay in the induction of statistical translation models from linguistically annotated parallel data, and in decoding with synchronous stochastic tree-substitution grammars.
I completed my Ph.D. in early 2005 under the supervision of Dr. Andy Way. The title of my thesis is Data-Oriented Models of Parsing and Translation. This work involved building
both parsing and translation software. The parser accepts a
natural-language sentence and returns an analysis for that sentence,
whereas the translation system returns a corresponding translation.
The systems learn from previously parsed and translated examples
using both linguistic and statistical information, and are
implemented in C++. My Ph.D. research focused on the behaviour of
these systems.
In May 2001 I completed my B.Sc. in Applied Computational Linguistics.
