Dr. Markus Helfert is a Lecturer in Information Systems at the School of Computing, Dublin City University (Ireland). He carries out research in Information Quality Management and teaches and supervises research projects, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Taught courses include Analytical Information Systems, Information Systems Strategy, Information Systems Framework and Logistics Management. As promoter and programme chair for the European Master of Science in Business Informatics at Dublin City University, he coordinated the curriculum development and the validation and accreditation process for this new degree. The central focus of this programme is to qualify individuals, enabling them to develop information system architectures to solve business problems of organisations within the networked economy. Unique characteristics of this programme are the engineering perspective and the integration of cultural studies into the curriculum and the co-operation with a network of universities and industry partners throughout Europe. In this regard he is also involved in a European project, which aims to develop a common business informatics curriculum and implement a joint-master degree in business informatics in Europe.

His research is centred on Information Quality Management and includes research areas such as Data Warehousing, Business Process Management, Healthcare Information Systems, Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Information System Architectures. Current research focuses on the evaluation of the value of Information Quality Management in networked organisations and Information Quality Maturity models. In Ireland he co-established an industry-academic network involving professionals and researchers concerned about the quality of business data and information. The IQ Network Ireland is organising a series of events that  provides a forum for information quality throughout Irish organisations. The work in information quality builds on his PhD research in data quality management in data warehouse systems, which he completed in 2002 at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland).  Prior his appointment at Dublin City University, he held a research position at the Institute of Information Management at the University of St. Gallen, where he completed research in the competence centre Data Warehousing. The research was carried out in co-operation with partners from industry, including a major data quality improvement programme at one of the world-leading financial services companies.  In addition, he led the research team for Relationship Management Architecture.

Markus Helfert has authored academic articles and book contributions and has presented his work at international conferences including Advances in Management Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Quality (MIT-ICIQ), the International Workshop on 'Design and Management of Data Warehouses' (DMDW) and the International Conference for Business Informatics. Markus Helfert has served as member of programme committees and co-chaired the 2003 MIT International Conference on Information Quality and the International Workshop on Data and Information Quality in conjunction with CAiSE*04 and CAiSE*05 (International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering). He is co-editor of the special issue on Information Quality in Studies in Communication Sciences – An International Journal. In 2000 he founded at the University of St. Gallen the Data-Warehouse-Forum St. Gallen as frequent event in data warehousing with more than 200 participants from research and practice.

Markus Helfert holds a Doctor in business administration from the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland), a Master-Diploma in business informatics from the University Mannheim (Germany) and a Bachelor of Science from Napier University, Edinburgh (UK-Scotland).
