BIN-Net is involves ten cooperating universities in eight countries and is coordinated by the University of Vienna, Institute for Knowledge and Business Engineering. The project is funded under the SOCRATES/ERASMUS Programme by the European Commission (28545-IC-1-2003-1-AT-ERASMUS-PROGUC-1). It aims to develop a joint-master degree in Business Informatics in Europe and develops a common curriculum that supports teachers and student mobility. The main goal of the Project is to help acknowledge doctoral studies as an important "third" cycle of education, to define a framework for increasing the quality of all doctoral studies and to develop tools and methods for assessment, validation and certification of the knowledge and skills of PhD students. The overall objectives of the network are to establish the principles of effective, high quality, Europe-valid doctoral studies and to create the tools for doing this through analysing the existing systems, exchanging experiences and disseminating good practices among all partners. The first major study in the research programme aims to the development of an Irish Nursing Minimum Data Set (IMDS).The project is funded by the Irish Health Research Board. Carried out in collaboration with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Dublin (UCD). Professor Anne Scott (DCU, Principal Investigator) and Professor Pearl Treacy (UCD) are Co-Directors of the research programme.

The project draw on the experience of DCU School of Nursing on an existing project to provide a Virtual Hospital environment for Nursing students: CHASEtown. CHASEtown provides students with generic case studies that are adaptable to problem based learning scenarios and tasks. We plan to utilize this system for completing a set of simulations, in order to investigate the value of Information Quality in Nursing Decision Making. Supported by the DCU Teaching & Learning Fund and developed by the School of Nursing in Dublin City University CHASEtown is a pilot project for e-learning and mixed mode delivery for nurse education and training. Developed within Moodle, CHASEtown is a virtual learning environment, which mimics the real world with patient / client case studies and scenarios. Moodle - an open source platform provides the integrated, user-friendly, platform for web-based dissemination, communication, and interaction between academic staff, tutors, demonstrators and students. It is being used in a wide variety of ways to complement traditional, face-to-face teaching. (Project Coordinator: Pamela Henry)
