Current Research

Real-Time Web

My current activities in CLARITY involve the use of real-time search and data mining, with a focus on Twitter data.

Previous Research

Mobile Video Search

As part of the Human Media Archives Group at DCU I was responsible for the development of novel mobile video search systems for the iPad and iPhone devices, which were evaluated at TrecVid 2010

InSPeCT

The InSPecT (Integrated Surveillance for Port and City Traffic) project: an Enterprise Ireland funded Innovation partnership project with CLARITY and Fairview Analytics.

This project related to port security, and how computer vision technology, coupled with data management expertise, can increase the efficiency of port and city traffic monitoring.

Visualising Sentiment Analysis of Online Information

Previously I worked as a Postdoctoral researcher on a partnership project with Zignals: an Irish company working in the area of online stock trading.

The project focussed on the application of opinion mining and sentiment analysis to financial blog data.

Samsung

I worked as a Postdoctoral researcher and as R&D lead with a team of reserchers from the CDVP to develop a prototype Interactive TV system for Samsung Electronics. Here we applied various content-based technologies to provide novel functions on an iTV device, with a strong emphasis on maintaining a simple set of user interactions.

Tracking and Monitoring of Vehicle Traffic

I worked on a research project aimed at tracking and monitoring vehicle traffic. With the use of GPS and mapping software this information could then be searched with the use of an interactive system.

TREC

I particapated in TREC (Text REtrieval Conference) in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Mainly concentrating on the Terabyte track, but also contributing to the CDVP's particapation in TrecVid.

Físréal Search Engine

As part of this research Pete Wilkins and myself developed the Físréal Search Engine, in order to effectively search 1.2 terabytes of data (94,500,000 web pages), from the SPIRIT collection
