Research

Please note that as of 21/05/2010 I am no longer employed by DCU, and am moving to Google. I still retain some research interest, and contact is still welcomed, however my response times to emails may increase considerably ;). Correspondance regarding any research activities of the CDVP/CLARITY can be directed towards the CDVP homepage for contact details.

I was a Postdoc with the Centre for Digital Video Processing (CDVP), a cross-disciplinary research centre involving the Schools of Computing and Electrical Engineering at Dublin City University (DCU). My current project is the Information Access Disruptions (iAD) project, led by Cathal Gurrin.

I completed my Ph.D studies in 2009, producing my thesis: "An Investigation into weighted data fusion for Content-Based Multimedia Information Retrieval". My supervisor was Prof. Alan Smeaton and this work was being funded as part of the K-Space NoE.

My research interests continue to evolve with time and exposure to new ideas. Broadly speaking, my interests are in Multimedia Information Retrieval, and the wide variety of approaches that encompasses. In particular I have an interest in evaluation and in applications of machine learning techniques, as it's pretty obvious now that given sufficient data(^), the machine learning approaches can offer excellent performance.

^ Of course getting sufficient data, in particular user data, remains a rather significant problem.

Previously i've worked with the CDVP and with the Technologies for Electronic Documents (TED) group of the CSIRO (whose activities are now encompased by the CSIRO ICT Centre).

I'm also now involved in ECIR 2011 - Dublin, as the local organizer.

Publications

DORAS is an excellent resource provided by DCU which is now hosting the majority of our publications. This resource is very extensive, however there will still be some publications missing. If there is any in particular that is of interest and you cannot find online, please drop me an email.

Other aggregated lists of my publications can be found at:
