Introduction
I am an MSC student in the School of Computing at Dublin City University, Ireland. Currently I'm working under the supervision of Dr. Alistair Sutherland in the area of Gesture Recognition, in particular Irish Sign language Recognition. My work here is funded by The Embark Initiative operated by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET).

Sign Language Recognition
Sign language recognition is an extremely difficult task. Some Problems include accurate segmentation of the hand from the image, dealing with different skin colours, different sized hands, coping with both new and fluent signers, real time classification.

My current area of research is developing a transformation invariant hand shape classification system. I use the following techniques: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Hierarchical Multi-Scale search tree, Hidden Markov Models (HMM), Grayscale Normalisation using histogram equalisation. I use Poser which is a computer animation program to create the training images for the system.
