Title: Techniques for virtual machine management on IaaS clouds

IaaS cloud computing has revolutionized the way we reason about computing infrastructure thanks to its pay-as-you-go model: with a click of a button, users can create and operate whole virtual clusters that act the same way as their physical counterparts. However, this promise of ease of use, coupled with critical requirements such as elasticity and fast on-demand access that are needed to support the pay-as-you go model, raises difficult challenges for the virtualization layer: how to deploy and boot a large number of VMs concurrently as fast as possible? How to take a snapshot of individual VMs and collection of VMs that exhibit dependencies? How to migrate VMs when they run difficult application patterns such as I/O intensive activities? How to bridge the gap between current VM cost models and actual resource utilization? This talk aims to address several of the challenges mentioned above, while pointing out areas that present opportunities for improvement.

Bogdan Nicolae joined IBM Research in July 2012 as a member of the Exascale Systems group. Before this he was a postdoc within the Joint Laboratory for Petascale Computing, an initiative of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and INRIA. He holds a PhD from University of Rennes, France and a Dipl. Eng. degree from Politehnica University Bucharest, Romania. His research revolves around scalable storage techniques and fault tolerance for cloud computing and exascale architectures.
